Greywacke – A Stone of Strength and Endurance
Greywacke is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and abundant stones, formed over 200 million years ago from layers of sand, mud, and clay compressed deep within the earth. Its earthy grey to bluish tones, often flecked with subtle quartz veins, reflect the rugged landscapes where it is found – from alpine ranges to river valleys.
This stone embodies resilience, grounding, and stability. Known for its durability, Greywacke has been used traditionally in tools, building, and adornment, and today it is admired for its understated beauty and connection to the raw power of Aotearoa’s land.
